At 27, Sweat is on the last leg of his current deal and will become a free agent when this season concludes. Poles decided to make a play for Sweat, aiming to bolster the team's lackluster pass rush. Poles concluded that the immediate acquisition of Sweat outweighed waiting for the potential shuffle of free agents, including Sweat, or relying on the draft.
"We're trying to look ahead," Poles explained on Wednesday from Halas Hall. "Our team has done a thorough job evaluating the draft and free agency possibilities, and we felt seizing this chance to bring in a premier pass rusher was a smart move, with both immediate and long-term benefits in mind. We're in talks for a contract extension as we speak."
By not postponing to free agency, the Bears will forfeit a high second-round pick. Yet, Poles believes integrating Sweat into the team now holds more value than the gamble of free agency where Sweat could be tagged or sign elsewhere.
«The focus is on seizing the moment,» Poles remarked, emphasizing the urgency of trading for Sweat rather than waiting. «The landscape of free agency is dynamic and by the time it comes around, the scene will have shifted with players signing extensions or being tagged. For such a caliber player, we wanted to take action promptly.»
Interestingly, Montez Sweat wasn't the only edge rusher from the Commanders to find a new team; Chase Young was sent to the 49ers for a third-round pick. While the Bears had shown interest in Young, they opted for Sweat, uncertain if he would be available before the trade deadline.
"Initially, we didn't believe Montez was on the table," said Poles about the decision to pursue Sweat. "The opportunity seemed slim, but then it resurfaced in the final hours.»
This marks the second consecutive year Poles has relinquished a second-round pick at the trade deadline. Reflecting on the Claypool trade, he expressed a resolve to learn from past dealings while maintaining an aggressive approach to team-building.
Sweat himself is aware of the discussions on his future in Chicago, seeking stability, but remains open as negotiations unfold.
Poles remains optimistic about reaching an agreement on an extension, "I'm hopeful it'll be a swift process, and I'm confident about reaching a deal."
If an extension isn't agreed upon by March, the Bears could use the franchise or transition tag on Sweat. Poles envisions Sweat as a cornerstone in the team's rebuilding efforts, willing to pay a premium for the exclusive negotiating rights with a player he describes as "a multiplier" in hopes of shaping a strong foundation for the Bears' future. The trade was a quick decision, but Poles stands by the conviction that the potential benefits for the team are worth the investment.
