"Jordan Love is set to be the standout quarterback in the division," ESPN heard from Mike Tannenbaum. Although, in his defense, Tannenbaum seemed to be looking ahead, answering the question, "Who will be the premier quarterback in the NFC North?" rather than assessing the current lineup.
Arguing for Love as the cream of the crop today would be outlandish. Considering his scarce NFL experience, one could make a stronger case for him being at the bottom of the heap.
With a career spanning only 10 games, Love's record stands at 606 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. And of these games, he's been at the helm only once, leading the Packers to a defeat.
Tannenbaum's claim, however, leans heavily on the Packers' proven track record in molding quarterbacks. With Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers steering the team over the past couple of decades, Tannenbaum's wager is that Love will be shaped in the same mold, courtesy of the Packers' sustained success in grooming quarterbacks.
While this prediction is somewhat justifiable, the claim that Love is the best quarterback today falls short due to his limited experience, making comparisons with division's seasoned players like Kirk Cousins and Jared Goff or rising stars like Justin Fields, seem premature.
Louis Riddick, another former NFL executive, threw his support behind the only quarterback in the group with a Super Bowl ring - Jared Goff.
"Goff is primed to be the North's top quarterback. His team is poised to lead the North and contend for an NFC Super Bowl spot," Riddick stated.
Goff put up impressive numbers last season with the Lions. He threw for 4,438 yards, a personal best since his Los Angeles Rams' Pro Bowl era, completing 65 percent of his passes and securing the NFL's fifth-best QBR rating.
According to Riddick, Goff also clocked the second-best adjusted QBR in the pocket and the fourth quarter. Numbers that speak for themselves, especially when pitted against Love's career statistics.
Not to be overlooked, Kirk Cousins presents a formidable case. With a 13-4 record leading the Vikings last season, Cousins surpassed Goff's yards thrown, matched his touchdowns, and bettered his completion rate. Earning a Pro Bowl invitation last season, Cousins was indeed a performer.
The departure of Aaron Rodgers, traded to the New York Jets this off-season, opens up an exciting debate. The NFC North is more competitive than it's been in years, though the Detroit Lions, boasting a standout roster, look like a solid front runner.
Who will hold the title of the NFC North's best quarterback at the end of the season? We'll just have to wait and see.
