As the NFL training camp draws near, Jalen Carter, the talented defensive tackle from Georgia, finds himself embroiled in legal trouble once again. This serves as a reminder of the bullet the Bears may have dodged by trading their No. 9 pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 NFL draft. In exchange, the Bears secured the No. 10 pick and a 2024 fourth-rounder, opting to select Tennessee right tackle Darnell Wright instead of Carter.

Carter's promising draft stock took a hit after getting involved in legal issues on the night the Georgia Bulldogs clinched the National Championship. The repercussions continue to unfold, as Victoria Bowles, a former recruiting analyst for the university, filed a lawsuit against Carter and the University of Georgia athletics association. The lawsuit pertains to an accident that occurred on January 15, resulting in the tragic deaths of two members of Georgia's football program and severe injuries to Bowles and another individual.

According to ESPN, Bowles' lawsuit alleges that Carter "illegally left the scene without speaking to law enforcement and failed to render aid." The lawsuit also mentions that Carter left the scene in less than 10 minutes, despite being aware of his joint responsibility for the crash. The suit claims that Carter was motivated by the fear of negative publicity and its potential impact on his NFL draft status.

The incident involved Chandler LeCroy, who was racing against Carter on the night of Georgia's victory. LeCroy was driving at an alarming speed of 104.2 miles per hour before crashing into trees and utility poles, resulting in his tragic death. His blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit in Georgia.

Bowles, who suffered extensive injuries from the accident, is seeking compensation for approximately $170,000 in medical damages. The injuries listed in the lawsuit are truly harrowing, including lumbar fractures, fractured vertebrae, broken ribs, a broken clavicle, dental injuries, kidney and liver lacerations, a punctured and collapsed lung, and abdominal bleeding.

This latest lawsuit adds to the legal woes that Carter already faced. Last March, he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing, resulting in 12 months of probation, 80 hours of community service, a $1,000 fine, and mandatory attendance at a state-approved driving course.

Apart from Bowles' lawsuit, Carter is also named in another lawsuit filed by the father of Devin Willock, a player who tragically lost his life in the incident.

While Bears general manager Ryan Poles did not comment directly on Carter, he expressed confidence in the Eagles' ability to manage and support him within their roster. Poles emphasized the importance of team culture and understanding the capabilities of one's own locker room. He reiterated his satisfaction with the decision the Bears made and acknowledged that Carter has found himself in an environment with a solid foundation.

As training camp approaches, the outcome of these legal battles will undoubtedly have an impact on Carter's future in the NFL. The Bears will be closely monitoring the situation, grateful for the direction they chose in the draft and hopeful for a successful season ahead.
