Before the change, if a playoff game (or regular season game) went into overtime, then the first team to score a touchdown would win and the game would be over, and if they scored a field goal then the game continues.
Now, this new rule allows both teams to have the ball at least once, so even if a team scores a touchdown, then the other would have a chance at tying the game, or winning with a 2-point conversion.
