Many assumed that the former New England Patriots head coach would swiftly secure a new head coaching position after his departure from Foxborough last month. However, Belichick only interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, who ultimately selected Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris as their head coach.
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the most accomplished head coach in NFL history was passed over this year for three primary reasons, as outlined by multiple league sources:
1. Belichick's mishandling of the Patriots' quarterback situation in recent years, including his decision to let Tom Brady leave in free agency without a clear succession plan.
2. His desire to maintain total control of football operations, which raised concerns for potential employers.
3. A growing concern over Belichick's ability to relate to and connect with the current generation of players.
Furthermore, the report noted that Belichick's loyalty to certain coaches and executives was viewed as a "red flag" by teams. One example mentioned was Belichick bringing back former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to serve as the offensive play-caller in 2022. Additionally, there were stories circulating about Belichick overruling others in crucial draft decisions, and his inconsistent draft record since 2014 did not strengthen his case for a key role in player personnel decisions.
As a result, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach will not start the 2024 season in a coaching position. While it's possible that a team may hire Belichick as an advisor or coach mid-season, it is more likely that he will take the year off and look for his next head coaching opportunity in the following year.
