They were some players that shined big time on defense last season. The first one that comes to mind is, of course, Robert Quinn. He had arguably the best season of his illustrious career. He racked up a staggering 18,5 sacks in 16 games played and he was named to his third pro bowl. He played around 70% of the defensive snaps and his tremendous impact surely was felt when he was on the field. In addition, the return of Khalil Mack in 2022 should take some pressure away from him.
Another stud player that should be a huge part of Matt Eberflus' defense is Jaylon Johnson. He is truly developing into one of the NFL's best young cornerbacks. His play in 2021 was nothing short of spectacular. He even travelled with the opposing best wide receiver on some occasions. I strongly believe he has all the tools to become a perennial pro-bowler for the Bears.
Some other pieces that should be huge contributors to a potential number one ranked defense are: Roquan Smith, Akiem Hicks, Khalil Mack and Eddie Jackson. If Jackson and Mack could return to the level of play they were playing prior to the 2021 season, the Bears could become a serious contender. A more ground-heavy attack with Justin Fields and David Montgomery could also play a big part in this potential dominant defense. They have some incredible pieces on the field, mixing that with the brilliant defensive mind of Matt Eberflus and you might just have the ingredient to a great defense.
