The Carolina Panthers are poised to utilize the franchise tag on Brian Burns, a pass-rushing target long coveted by the Chicago Bears.

Despite the Bears' persistent interest in acquiring Burns over the past seasons, their efforts have yet to materialize into a deal. While Burns was initially a player of interest during trade discussions last off-season, the Bears ultimately secured wide receiver D.J. Moore as part of their package for the first overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Although the franchise tag was the anticipated outcome for Burns this off-season, reports suggest that contract negotiations between him and the Panthers have stalled. This presents an opportunity for Bears' general manager Ryan Poles to revisit talks with the Panthers regarding Burns, especially given the Bears' defensive line needs. However, the Bears may face constraints in terms of the resources required to execute such a trade.

Barring a significant shift, it appears unlikely that the Bears will succeed in landing Burns. The team may explore alternatives in free agency and the draft to address their defensive end position, particularly focusing on complementing Montez Sweat. Potential draft prospects like Jared Verse from Florida State could be on the radar, albeit contingent on the Bears' draft position and available options like Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze.

In free agency, names like Danielle Hunter and Jadaveon Clowney have surfaced as potential targets for the Bears, with Clowney potentially offering more appeal due to contract considerations.
