The Chicago Bears have yet to finalize their selection for a defensive coordinator, but reports suggest that the team is preparing to conduct an interview with Joe Barry, the former Defensive Coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, for a position within their defensive coaching staff. Barry held the role of Packers' DC for the past three seasons but was released following the Packers' inability to secure a spot in the NFC Championship game, despite holding a lead in the fourth quarter.

While there may be anticipated criticism from Packers fans regarding Barry, it's important to note that the Packers' defensive performance was relatively average during his tenure. They ranked 13th in Defensive DVOA for the 2023 season, finishing 10th in points allowed and 13th in yards allowed. Notably, their pass defense was a strength, ranking 9th in yards allowed and 10th in touchdowns allowed. However, their defense struggled to generate turnovers, ranking 31st in interceptions, and had difficulties defending against the run, placing 28th in rushing yards allowed and 17th in rushing touchdowns allowed.

The decision to interview Joe Barry raises questions, primarily due to his extensive experience as a linebackers coach and his history as a defensive coordinator for the Lions and Washington. The potential challenge lies in the fact that Barry hasn't been associated with a 4-3 base defense since 2008, with a brief stint coaching the Buccaneers' linebackers in a 4-3 base defense in 2009, which resulted in a 3-13 record. This raises the question of compatibility with the Bears' defensive system under Matt Eberflus.

Notably, Joe Barry is also scheduled to interview with the Philadelphia Eagles, a move that seems more logical given the recent hiring of Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinatora coach well-versed in managing a 3-4 base defense.

One plausible explanation for the Bears' interest in Joe Barry could be a desire to gain insight into the inner workings of the Packers' organization, a team that has historically dominated the Chicago Bears. Additionally, the decision to consider Barry before appointing a defensive coordinator is unconventional, especially considering the previous situation with Alan Williams in 2023. Matt Eberflus is expected to retain significant control over the defense, which may explain the unconventional sequence of interviews.
