While Bears fans may not have had much to celebrate this season, the news of Devin Hester, Julius Peppers, and McMichael's induction brought joy to their supporters.
For the McMichael family and their neighbors in southwest suburban Homer Glen, the announcement was a cause for celebration. The sound of bagpipes and drums from the Emerald Society filled the air as they honored the new Hall of Famer, who listened from an open window at his home.
"This is all he's ever wanted," expressed Kathy McMichael, Steve's sister. "Steve means the world to us," added Betsy Shepherd, McMichael's longtime publicist.
McMichael, affectionately known as "Mongo" by Bears fans, was a dominant defensive tackle and played a crucial role in the Bears' legendary 1985 Super Bowl-winning team, recording the second-most sacks in franchise history.
"We're really, really proud," Kathy continued. "He's my hero and always has been."
Diagnosed with ALS in 2021, McMichael faced significant health challenges, including a recent battle with sepsis and pneumonia. Despite the odds, Shepherd believed McMichael held on for the Hall of Fame.
"We're going to Canton!" she exclaimed, referring to the location of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Ohio.
Bears fans and the McMichael family expressed overwhelming pride at the news.
"It's the most amazing feeling in the whole world to know that he's in and to know that he knows it," Kathy said.
With the induction of Hester, Peppers, and McMichael, the Bears will now have 40 Hall of Famers, the most of any NFL team.
