The Bears' decision to waive P.J. Walker on Sunday didn't automatically elevate Bagent to the backup position. With Nathan Peterman in the mix, who statistically outperformed Bagent during the preseason, and the potential to acquire another quarterback off waivers, Bagent's role isn't set in stone. However, his undeniable impression makes it challenging to envision a season without him.
"From the moment Tyson stepped in, his dedication was evident," noted Justin Fields. "He's incredibly inquisitive, always seeking to understand the game better and constantly soaking up knowledge. Seeing his dedication and hard work translate to on-field success has been rewarding. Anyone who spends time with Tyson will quickly realize his humility and commitment to the game."
Coming from Division II Shepherd, Bagent's journey has turned him into a bit of a sensation. The intrigue surrounding his smaller school background and his stories from Shepherd have caught many people's attention.
"It's always interesting when people ask about where I studied or are curious about Shepherd," said Bagent. "There's a unique excitement in their eyes."
Regarding the backup position, it remains an open competition. Peterman's preseason stats, including a touchdown pass and an impressive passer rating of 94.6 (compared to Bagent's 67.6), suggest he might have the edge. Moreover, Bagent's interception and a modest 5.4 yards per pass attempt don't necessarily place him ahead of Peterman, who managed an impressive 7.2 yards per attempt.
However, while the Bears are familiar with Peterman's capabilities, Bagent represents fresh potential.
Peterman previously served as the Bears' third quarterback and saw some game time, notably as the starting quarterback in the regular-season finale against Minnesota. Whether Bagent can surpass Peterman and secure a more stable role remains to be seen.
