What to look for in Roquan Smith's return this Saturday!
This Saturday will mark the preseason debut for LB Roquan Smith after he missed the first two games while conducting a «hold-in» amid stalled contract negotiations with the Chicago Bears. Smith still attended meetings and practices but didn't participate on the field with his teammates during that Hold-in.
After determining he would play out the final year of his rookie contract rather than continue his hold-in, he finally returned to practice last Saturday and had a week to get back in game shape. The matchup against Cleveland will be a chance for him to get even more comfortable in live action with some new teammates, including middle linebacker Nicholas Morrow and also inside Matt Eberflus' new scheme.
Here is what Chris Emma had to say on his return:
Roquan's return
Bears star linebacker Roquan Smith has been gradually ramping up since he returned to practice last Saturday following a weeks-long contract hold-in. The next step will be for him to play in his first preseason game Saturday, which will be a welcomed sight for the Bears.
Smith is expected to play for most of the first half, which will allow Eberflus and his staff to evaluate where he's at after he missed most of training camp. The Bears' coaching staff has praised Smith's work behind the scenes in meetings and believes he's in a good place with his understanding of the new scheme.
