In a surprising deal, the 49ers parted with their 2021 No. 3 overall draft pick, sending him to a long-standing rival in exchange for merely a fourth-round draft pick. Lance became available after being outperformed by 2022 seventh-round pick Brock Purdy and the newly signed free agent Sam Darnold.
On a recent episode of his "Stinkin Truth" podcast, cited by Karl Rasmussen of Sports Illustrated, Schlereth didn't mince words, blaming the trade as another reason why the Cowboys are unlikely to capture another Lombardi Trophy anytime soon:
"The reason the Cowboys won't win anything is because Jerry Jones just can't help himself. He goes and makes this trade without even consulting other key figures in the organization, be it Stephen Jones, Mike McCarthy, or even his own quarterback... Sure, they'll win a lot of regular-season games due to their talent. They'll make it to the playoffs and then collapse, like they do every year."
Jones is currently the only NFL owner who also holds the title of general manager for his team. Despite a strong draft history that includes standout players like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Zack Martin, Tony Pollard, Trevon Diggs, Micah Parsons, and DeMarcus Lawrence, the Cowboys have consistently fallen short for nearly three decades. They haven't made it to the NFC Championship Game since 1995, the same year they last won the Super Bowl. Last season, their championship aspirations were dashed in the Divisional Round with a loss to the 49ers.
