The bone of contention here appears to be Fields' confidenceor what Cowherd sees as ego. In a recent interview with CBS Sports, Fields was asked to name his top five running quarterbacks in NFL history. Given the green light by Bryant McFadden of All Things Covered to include himself, Fields unflinchingly stated, "Oh, I am. Because I definitely think I am," before adding four more quarterbacks to his list.
Fields' top five rushing QBs shook out like this:1. Justin Fields2. Mike Vick3. Cam Newton4. Lamar Jackson5. Steve Young
Just last season, Fields fell a mere 64 yards shy of breaking Lamar Jackson's single-season QB rushing recorda record Jackson himself set in his second NFL year. That's the same timespan Fields took to reach such impressive numbers with the Bears. However, when Fields positions himself among such elite company, Cowherd has a problem with it. Odd, isn't it?
Cowherd slammed Fields for his "lack of self-awareness," an insinuation that Fields has an inflated ego and should abstain from placing himself amongst such esteemed ranks until he's accomplished more. Even more egregious, Cowherd compares Fields to the likes of Johnny Manziel and Baker Mayfield, then labels him a bust. His reasoning?
"I don't think he's one of the top five running quarterbacks. You get banged up, can't win games. It's not the end of the world. MVP, MVP, 4-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl winner . . . bust. I've always been 60/40 that Justin Fields is going to succeed. I'm coming back 5 percent. Lacks a little self-awareness."
Cowherd's qualms seem to rest on Fields' choice to include himself in his top five running QBs. Had Fields chosen Russell Wilson instead, Cowherd insinuates he would have respected him more. He criticizes Fields for his 5-20 career stats, overlooking the team factors that contribute to such figures and the fact that Fields' offensive support was less than stellar last season. This critique smells more like a bid for views and clicks during the offseason lull than a valid argument.
Comparing Fields to Wilson is shaky at best. Wilson only had one season with over 580 rushing yards, whereas Fields clocked 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns last season. A better comparison would be Josh Allen or perhaps Randall Cunningham, but Wilson? Really, Cowherd?
While Fields indeed has a lot to demonstrate this year, questioning his running prowess seems off-base. And to paint him as ego-driven? Fields hasn't given any indication of such behavior. This is a woefully misguided take, and it's about time Cowherd backed off from targeting the Bears' QB."
